WhatsApp's Data Saving Feature: Not a Scam, but a Quota Saver

In the ever-evolving landscape of digital communication, WhatsApp remains a staple for millions worldwide. However, recent confusion sparked by a tweet from the Indonesian National Police Public Relations Division, @DivHumas_Polri, regarding the "View" button on WhatsApp, has stirred controversy, with claims of it being a scam.

According to cybersecurity expert Alfons Tanujaya from Vaksincom, this assertion couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, Tanujaya clarifies that the "View" button is a feature designed by WhatsApp to conserve data usage for its users.

This button is triggered when certain data-saving settings are enabled within WhatsApp on the user's device. Contrary to speculation, it's not a conduit for malware or APKs.

"The 'View' button is a data-saving feature. It doesn't automatically download media, photos, or documents. There's no need to fear it; it's not like an APK or malware," explains Tanujaya.

He further confirms that the issue was addressed with the complaint platform aduannomor.id, where it was verified to be a case of misinterpreted information.

"Vaksin.com has confirmed this with the complaint platform, and it turns out this information is an old piece that has been misinterpreted. So, the notion of WhatsApp 'View' button scams is misinformation and incorrect. Please refrain from spreading it further. If possible, please take it down," adds Tanujaya.

Tanujaya also criticizes the advice provided in the post regarding handling devices infected with malware, particularly the suggestion to immediately restart the device. He suggests a more appropriate course of action, especially with the prevalent APK SMS theft malware in Indonesia.

"If you're hit by genuine malware, the correct response is to activate airplane mode immediately to prevent SMS theft. Then, inspect which applications are installed and capable of accessing SMS," advises Tanujaya.

Furthermore, he reassures users that receiving messages with the "View" button doesn't necessitate blocking the sender's number, as it could simply be someone known to the user sending photos or documents.

"Don't rush to block your friend just because a 'View' button pops up. The button appears due to your WhatsApp settings aimed at saving data," concludes Tanujaya.

In the era of misinformation and digital skepticism, it's essential to discern between genuine threats and benign features. WhatsApp's 'View' button, far from being a scam, serves as a practical tool for data-conscious users, reinforcing the importance of accurate information dissemination in the digital age.
