The UK's Laser Drone Destructor

The Ministry of Defence of the United Kingdom (MOD) has unveiled a groundbreaking video showcasing its latest laser-based weapon called DragonFire. This video displays a laser-directed energy weapon (LDEW) successfully targeting aerial threats during a test off the coast of Scotland last January.

The footage illustrates the capabilities of the laser weapon, with the MOD considering it to have the potential to revolutionize the defensive capabilities of the United Kingdom, as reported by Business Insider on Friday, March 15, 2024.

In its statement last January, the MOD described the weapon as having exceptionally high accuracy, capable of precisely hitting small coins from a distance of up to 1 kilometer. However, they have kept the maximum range of this laser weapon classified.

Not only does DragonFire boast high accuracy, but it is also considered economical compared to other air defense systems. Each laser shot costs only USD 13. For comparison, traditional air defense missiles currently in use require millions of dollars for each missile.

The MOD also showcased an animation depicting a scenario in which DragonFire is deployed on Royal Navy warships to target small boats and three drones, resulting in one drone exploding and two others suffering control system damage.

According to the MOD, DragonFire could provide significant operational advantages by delivering frontline air defense capabilities while reducing ammunition costs and minimizing the risk of additional damage.

DragonFire is deemed effective in countering drone attacks, particularly as drones are increasingly utilized for both offensive strikes and enemy position surveillance, as seen in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. powered by hasil quick count pilpres 2024

However, analysts point out a potential weakness of DragonFire, namely its effectiveness in adverse weather conditions with thick cloud cover, which remains unknown.

As the MOD continues to develop and refine DragonFire, it represents a paradigm shift in defense technology, promising enhanced security and cost-effectiveness in safeguarding against modern threats. With its precision and efficiency, DragonFire stands as a testament to England's commitment to innovation in defense strategies.
