Accelerating Indonesia's Internet to 100 Mbps - Bakti Sets the Stage with Palapa Ring Integration

Indonesia is poised for a significant leap forward. The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology's (Kominfo) Telecommunication and Information Accessibility Agency (Bakti) is orchestrating a monumental project set to revolutionize internet speeds across the archipelago: Palapa Ring Integration.

According to Ookla's Global Speedtest Index released in January 2024, Indonesia's average mobile internet speed reached 25.37 Mbps, while fixed broadband surged to 29.43 Mbps. However, the Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Budi Arie Setiadi, envisions elevating Indonesia's internet speed, particularly fixed broadband, to a minimum of 100 Mbps. This ambitious endeavor aims not only to compete globally but also to establish Indonesia as a digital frontrunner in Southeast Asia.

Fadhilah Mathar, CEO of Bakti Kominfo, emphasized the critical importance of Palapa Ring Integration in achieving this goal. "Targeting 100 Mbps for fixed broadband necessitates extensive fiberization, both terrestrial and undersea cable systems," stated Mathar during a press conference at the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology on Friday (8/3/2024).

Previously, the government initiated the Palapa Ring project, focusing on optic fiber cable installations in remote, outermost, and frontier regions (known as 3T areas). This project, spearheaded by Bakti Kominfo, was divided into three segments: West, Central, and East.

The forthcoming Palapa Ring Integration project seeks to consolidate the fragmented Palapa Ring infrastructure, ensuring seamless connectivity of all Indonesian regencies and cities through fiber optic networks. software developer ngapain aja?

Bakti Kominfo's plan for Palapa Ring Integration entails constructing a backbone spanning 12,083 kilometers to enhance the utility and resilience of the existing Palapa Ring while integrating it into the backbone infrastructure connected to international networks.

This integrated network will stretch over 12,083 kilometers, comprising 8,203 kilometers of land-based cables and 3,880 kilometers of undersea cables.

"We are currently refining and evaluating the feasibility study for Palapa Ring Integration. Our aim is to achieve budgetary efficiencies and technical optimizations by involving multiple stakeholders," Mathar explained.

For instance, Bakti Kominfo is engaging in discussions with mobile operators, associations such as Apjatel, and other telecommunication service providers to ensure nationwide internet accessibility.

"In addition to the fiberization roadmap, we hope that the Minister will soon unveil aspects of the digital infrastructure roadmap," Mathar concluded.

With Palapa Ring Integration on the horizon, Indonesia is poised to accelerate its digital transformation, ushering in an era of high-speed internet access that will propel the nation's socioeconomic development into the future.
