North Korean and Russian Hackers Use ChatGPT to Launch Cyber ​​Attacks

The world of cybersecurity is constantly evolving, with new threats emerging as technology advances. Similarly, Thallium, a hacker group believed to be based in North Korea, has been utilizing LLMs to research publicly reported security vulnerabilities and exploit them in their attacks. Additionally, they have been using AI to automate simple tasks such as creating phishing scripts and content, streamlining their operations and increasing their efficiency.


Meanwhile, Curium, an Iranian hacker group, has been using LLMs to generate email phishing campaigns and develop code that can evade detection by antivirus applications. This highlights the potential for AI to be used in offensive cyber operations, enabling adversaries to circumvent traditional security measures and launch more sophisticated attacks.


Even hacker groups from China have been leveraging LLMs for research, script writing, translation, and refining their attack techniques. This demonstrates the widespread adoption of AI technology among state-backed adversaries, posing a significant challenge for defenders.


In response to these emerging threats, Microsoft is developing AI-based solutions such as Security Copilot, an AI assistant designed to assist cybersecurity experts in identifying data breaches and analyzing security signals.
